After a two-year hiatus, the guided hikes to the QHR sandhills are back. The county has just announced the signup for the 2022 QHR sandhills hike. Here’s the link: space is limited; as of 3/16, there are only a few spots left.
The CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife owns several acres adjacent to Quail Hollow, in part to protect sensitive habitat. Only one QHR volunteer, Sean Wharton, has been trained and has the trust of the state to lead hikes into the sandhills. And they only happen once a year, in April. They were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to covid.
More than a hike, this as an outdoor classroom, as participants learn a lot about the unique geology, flora, and fauna of the QHR sandhills.
